History & origins

Byeondong Parish was established in 1986 when it was separated from Doma-dong Parish. As residential areas in Seo-gu, Daejeon expanded and the Catholic community grew, part of the older parish territory was reorganized to form a separate parish community.

After the parish was established, work proceeded toward a permanent church, and the present building was completed in 1992. The church is characterized by red brickwork and vertical wall masses of varying heights that have been interpreted as evoking hands raised in prayer. Controlled natural light enters between projecting walls, while the relatively short distance between altar and congregation was designed to reinforce a sense of liturgical unity.

The bent exterior stairway, the second-floor plaza, and the movement from the plaza into the worship space are also distinctive elements. On a limited site, the design combines vertical walls, red brick, and carefully introduced light to address both religious symbolism and the practical needs of worship.

The history of Byeondong Catholic Church can therefore be read not only as a story of parish division and church construction, but also as the way a new Catholic community gave lasting architectural form to its liturgical life.
