About this place
Buseok Mission Station is a Catholic mission station under Seosan Yecheon-dong Parish in the Diocese of Daejeon, serving the local Catholic community of Buseok-myeon in Seosan. The diocesan bulletin identifies it explicitly as “Buseok Mission Station of Seosan Yecheon-dong Parish” and gives its current location, clearly distinguishing it from other places with the same name.
The mission station has its own worship space and functions as a small community connected to the parent parish, where local Catholics gather and continue their faith life. The interior ceiling, shaped with a curve reminiscent of a ship, is also noted as a distinctive feature of the building.
Buseok is therefore not a separate parish with a resident pastor but a local Catholic base within the pastoral care of Seosan Yecheon-dong Parish. Visitors can see here how a small rural mission community has sustained communal faith over time while remaining connected to its mother parish.
History & origins
The recorded history of Buseok Mission Station reaches back to 1922, when the area was under the pastoral care of a priest from Seosan Parish and was recorded as having 24 Catholics. The community continued as a mission station of Seosan Parish and later passed under Seokrim-dong Parish as parish structures in the Seosan area changed.
For many years the community had no separate mission building and held its services in private homes. In 2001 it finally established an independent mission chapel. Around the time of construction, evangelization led by the first community president, Joseph Nam Yang-woo, brought many new Catholics into the Daedu-ri area of Buseok-myeon. Nam donated the land, and construction was supported by the offerings of mission members and assistance from the parent parish. The new mission building was dedicated in July 2001.
When Seosan Yecheon-dong Parish was established in 2004, Buseok Mission Station came under the new parish's jurisdiction. The community thus retained its local identity while becoming connected to a new mother parish within the reorganized pastoral structure of the Seosan region.
The history of Buseok Mission Station is the story of a small Catholic community that continued through several changes of parish jurisdiction and grew from home-based gatherings into a community with its own worship space. Local evangelization, the donation of land, and shared offerings were central to making that physical home possible.
