About this place
Banghyeon-ri Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in the Diocese of Daejeon and is currently under Onyang Parish in the Asan district. It is a small liturgical community where Catholics in the Banghyeon-ri area of Yeomchi-eup can continue their life of faith in connection with their parent parish. Its basic identity is therefore that of a mission station operating within the pastoral care of a parent parish, not an independent parish.
Mission stations have long been an important local structure in Korean Catholic life, allowing Catholics who live far from a parish church to gather nearby for prayer, liturgy, and community life. Banghyeon-ri developed within Onyang Parish’s long tradition of serving scattered rural communities in Asan and has helped connect local Catholics with the wider parish. The meaning of the place lies less in elaborate facilities than in the continuity of local gatherings and relationships among the faithful.
History & origins
The exact date when Banghyeon-ri Mission Station was first established, and the earlier process by which a Catholic village may have formed there, cannot be determined from the reliable sources currently available. The detailed history of Onyang Parish, however, records that in May 1975 Father Anselmo Yu Jae-sik, then pastor, built a new hall for Banghyeon Mission Station. This shows that by the mid-1970s a Catholic community in the Banghyeon area was organized as a mission station and possessed a space for common liturgy and gatherings.
At the time, Onyang Parish was serving a network of mission stations across the Asan area. Unlike communities such as Dogo and Mosan, which later developed into independent parishes, Banghyeon remained a mission station and continued its life of faith in relationship with its parent parish. This difference illustrates that the history of a mission station does not necessarily lead toward parish status; depending on local scale and pastoral needs, a smaller community may continue in that form for decades.
The current Korean Catholic directory lists Onyang as the parent parish of Banghyeon-ri Mission Station. The reliably documented historical line therefore connects the construction of the mission hall in 1975 with the continuing jurisdiction of Onyang Parish today. Earlier foundation dates and detailed changes to the building are not stated because sufficient evidence has not been found.
