About this place

Yulgok Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving Yulgok-dong and the Gimcheon Innovation City area of Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province. Its patronal title is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The archdiocese's current directory also confirms that Yulgok has pastoral responsibility for Ungok Mission Station. A distinctive feature of the parish is that it links Catholics in a newly developed urban district with an older rural community within one pastoral territory.

As Gimcheon Innovation City developed and residents moved in from different places, Yulgok became a center of Catholic community life in the new city. Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis are provided at the parish church, while the mission station extends pastoral care to Catholics who live farther from the urban center. Visitors can therefore understand Yulgok as a new-city parish under the patronage of the Assumption and as a community joining two different settings of Catholic life, urban and rural.

History & origins

Yulgok Parish was established on January 21, 2015 to serve the new Catholic community forming as Gimcheon Innovation City was developed. An official Archdiocese of Daegu bulletin records that it was created from Jijwa Parish, its mother parish. The arrival of Catholics moving into the innovation city, together with believers already living in the surrounding area, created the need for a new pastoral community.

In its first year, a dedication ceremony for Yulgok Church was held on October 4, 2015, presided over by the episcopal vicar of the Fifth Vicariate. The archdiocesan magazine described the newly established parish as serving all of Yulgok-dong in Gimcheon Innovation City, all of Nongso-myeon, and part of Nam-myeon. The record shows the organization of parish life developing at the same time as the new city itself was taking shape.

As the community grew, a more permanent church was prepared. A 2024 issue of the official Daegu weekly states that a new church was dedicated on September 5, 2021. The move from the parish's early church to a newly dedicated building reflects changes in the size and needs of the Catholic community as the innovation city became established.

Yulgok today also has pastoral responsibility for Ungok Mission Station. The sequence from the creation of the parish in 2015, to the dedication of its early church that same year, and then to the dedication of the new church in 2021 shows how a Catholic community formed alongside urban development and gradually acquired a stable pastoral base.
