About this place

Yucheon Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving the Yucheon area of Hwawon-eup, Dalseong County, Daegu. Its patronal title is Mary, Mother of God. The archdiocese's current directory identifies it as a local parish where Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis for children, young people, and adults are carried out. It supports Catholic life in an expanding urban area near the boundary between Dalseong County and Dalseo-gu.

Although Yucheon is a relatively recent parish, the process of forming the community was marked by strong participation from the faithful. Before it had its own church, parishioners used the chapel of another facility and temporary spaces while still organizing lay groups and religious education, and they also took part in raising funds for construction. Today Yucheon, under the patronage of Mary, Mother of God, is significant as an example of Catholics from different neighboring parishes coming together and establishing a new community in a developing residential district.

History & origins

Yucheon Parish was established on September 4, 2007. At first, the pastoral director of the Third Vicariate served concurrently as the parish's first priest, while Catholics transferring from nearby communities such as Daegok and Hwawon formed the foundation of the new parish. Because there was not yet a church of its own, the community celebrated its first Mass on January 1, 2008 in the chapel of the municipal Hope Center and began parish life there.

After a new pastor arrived in February 2008, plans for a church became concrete. Ground was broken on August 3 of that year. During construction, weekday Masses were celebrated in a single-room container, while Sunday Mass continued at the Hope Center chapel. Even in these temporary settings, the parish organized religious education and lay associations, so the pastoral structure of the new community developed alongside the building project.

Construction advanced through the participation of parishioners and assistance from neighboring Catholic communities. To raise funds, not only the priest and parish leaders but also groups of parishioners visited nearby parishes and sought support. According to Bit, once construction was substantially complete, the first Mass in the new church was celebrated on Christmas Eve, allowing the community to move from temporary places of worship into its own permanent liturgical space.

The early history of Yucheon can therefore be summarized as the journey of Catholics in a developing residential district who separated from existing parishes, worshiped first in a borrowed chapel and a container, and then built a church of their own. The institutional creation of the parish and the practical formation of a new Catholic community took place almost at the same time, which is a defining feature of Yucheon's beginnings.
