About this place
Yonggang Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu at 109 Yurim-ro 13beon-gil, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. The official archdiocesan directory gives the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal title and lists Sindang Mission Station as belonging to the parish.
Established in 2011, it is a relatively young parish serving Catholics in the Yonggang and Hwangseong area of Gyeongju through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. It also links the parish church with its mission station as part of the local Church's pastoral network.
History & origins
Yonggang Parish was established on August 26, 2011. An official personnel notice of the Archdiocese of Daegu records the appointment of Father Thomas Choi Gwang-deuk as the first pastor of the newly established parish, and diocesan reporting at the time also announced the creation of Yonggang Parish.
The early community purchased a former factory warehouse and used it as a temporary church. Major remodeling began in late 2012, converting the structure into a two-story church complex. The new church was dedicated on September 15, 2013. The transformation of an existing industrial building into a permanent place of worship formed the distinctive early history of this new parish.
