History & origins

The Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began on December 8, 1935, when six consecrated women started community life at Samdeokdang in the Yeongcheon area. In March 1949, the community established a house at 12 Jukdo-dong, marking its first move to Pohang. On March 25, 1950, it moved to Songjeong and established the Songjeong motherhouse, and on September 8, 1952, the congregation was approved as a diocesan religious institute of the Archdiocese of Daegu.

In January 1969, the congregation moved to Daejam-dong and established its Daejam-dong motherhouse, providing the direct historical link to the present Pohang motherhouse. On November 7, 2023, a blessing was held for a new motherhouse building, marking another renewal of the community's facilities at Daejam-dong.
