About this place
The community of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at 85 Daejam-gil, Nam-gu, Pohang is listed in the Korean Catholic Directory as the congregation's motherhouse. The congregation describes its purpose as giving glory to the merciful Triune God and seeking the reign of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and its official website lists apostolates including parish mission, social welfare, health care, early childhood education, overseas mission, and retreats.
The Daejam-dong motherhouse is a central community where the sisters' common life and prayer, formation, and apostolic works are connected. Its defining identity is not that of a visitor facility, but of a motherhouse in which the congregation's history and mission continue in present community life.
History & origins
The Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began on December 8, 1935, when six consecrated women started community life at Samdeokdang in the Yeongcheon area. In March 1949, the community established a house at 12 Jukdo-dong, marking its first move to Pohang. On March 25, 1950, it moved to Songjeong and established the Songjeong motherhouse, and on September 8, 1952, the congregation was approved as a diocesan religious institute of the Archdiocese of Daegu.
In January 1969, the congregation moved to Daejam-dong and established its Daejam-dong motherhouse, providing the direct historical link to the present Pohang motherhouse. On November 7, 2023, a blessing was held for a new motherhouse building, marking another renewal of the community's facilities at Daejam-dong.
