About this place

Yeonhwari Retreat House is a retreat and prayer house of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Jicheon-myeon, Chilgok-gun. The Korean Catholic Directory lists it as a retreat/prayer house and identifies the Daegu Priory of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing as the religious community responsible for it.

It is a place where individuals and groups can step away from ordinary routines for prayer and meditation on Scripture. Its character is shaped by Benedictine hospitality, silence, and the practice of retreat as a time to renew one's life of faith.

History & origins

The site of Yeonhwari Retreat House was not originally developed as a retreat facility. According to a Catholic GoodNews feature on the house, it had been used by Waegwan Abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict as a tuberculosis sanatorium. The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing took over the property in 1982 and began developing it as a quiet place of prayer.

It opened in 1992 as a “House of Prayer,” and two years later, in 1994, it began using the name “Retreat House.” Its history is therefore one of a former medical and convalescent setting being transformed into a place of retreat grounded in monastic prayer and hospitality.
