About this place
Yeonheung Mission Station is a mission community of Goa Parish in the Archdiocese of Daegu, located at 482 Poa-ro, Goa-eup, Gumi. The archdiocesan parish directory identifies it as a mission station attached to Goa Parish. It has served as a small local Catholic community where faithful living away from the parish church can gather for prayer and liturgical life.
An account in the diocesan magazine Light shows that the mission chapel and its community have long supported the faith life of local Catholics. Because present Mass schedules and operating arrangements may change, visitors should confirm current information with Goa Parish.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Yeonheung took a more definite form in 1959, when catechism instruction began in a room of the home of an elderly woman named Kim Bunda. According to a report in the diocesan magazine Light, Kim Hong-bae (Peter) and eight others were baptized, and as the number of faithful grew, the community began working toward having its own mission chapel.
A Mass of blessing for the mission chapel was celebrated on December 18, 1961, by Father Noh Gyu-chae (Augustine). The mission subsequently belonged in turn to Hwanggeum-dong Parish in Gimcheon, Wonpyeong Parish in Gumi, and Seonsan Parish, before becoming part of the present Goa Parish. These changes of affiliation show the continuity of the mission community as parish structures in the region developed.
