History & origins

Catholic parish life in the Yeongcheon area was preceded by Yongpyeong Parish in Hwasan-myeon, founded in 1907. While serving there, Father Louis Delande of the Paris Foreign Missions Society established a mission station in Yeongcheon town and sent two consecrated women from Samdeokdang together with a lay catechist. This missionary foothold later developed into Yeongcheon Parish.

On January 1, 1936, the diocese formally established Yeongcheon Parish by appointing Father Froidvaux of the Paris Foreign Missions Society as its first pastor. Exactly ninety years later, on January 1, 2026, a new church was dedicated, linking the community's beginnings as a mission station with a new stage in its parish history.
