History & origins

Yangnam Parish became an independent Catholic community in the 1990s, when parishes in the Gyeongju area were being reorganized in response to changing residential patterns. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Seongdong Parish records the broader process by which the Yangnam community separated from Seongdong, while the current official information of the Archdiocese of Daegu gives June 1, 1996 as the founding date of Yangnam Parish. Archbishop Paul Ri Moun-hi’s pastoral record likewise includes Yangnam among the parishes established in 1996.

After its establishment, Yangnam developed as a Catholic center for Gyeongju’s East Sea coast, and its pastoral relationship with Gampho mission station continues today. Parish facilities were also used for more than local liturgical use. In 2003, the Catholic Times listed the “Emmaus Retreat Center at Yangnam Catholic Church in Gampho” among the locations used by St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center for small-group summer camps, showing that the parish’s facilities also served educational and fellowship activities of Church institutions.

The parish continued its coastal ministry over the next three decades. In June 2026, a Mass and Confirmation were celebrated to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the parish’s establishment, with Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil joining the community. This official commemoration shows that the small coastal parish that became independent in the mid-1990s had developed into a community sustained across generations.

Unlike older urban parishes with extensive surviving records of successive church buildings, Yangnam’s documented history is clearer in its pastoral trajectory: it emerged from the division of Gyeongju-area parishes, maintained ministry linked with Gampho mission station, and opened parish facilities to broader Church community activities.
