About this place

Wolseong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu centered on Wolseong-dong in Dalseo-gu, Daegu. Its patronal title is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, placing Marian devotion at the heart of the parish's spiritual identity. The archdiocese's current directory identifies it as a local parish with Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis for those preparing for baptism, serving as a center of ordinary Catholic life in a densely populated part of Dalseo-gu.

Wolseong has also taken part in archdiocesan activities beyond the internal life of the parish. During preparations for the centenary of the Archdiocese of Daegu, it hosted a formation gathering for parish committee members of the Third Vicariate, and in later years it continued to host confirmations and community events. Today Wolseong combines care for its own parish community, shaped by Marian devotion, with the capacity to serve as a pastoral gathering place for the wider vicariate and archdiocese when needed.

History & origins

Wolseong Parish was established on July 10, 1992. During the tenure of Archbishop Paul Ri Moun-hi, the Archdiocese of Daegu was creating new parishes in response to expanding residential districts and a growing Catholic population in the city, and Wolseong became an independent pastoral community within that process. With the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal title, the parish organized the liturgical and catechetical life of Catholics in the area.

After becoming established, Wolseong also began to serve activities beyond its immediate neighborhood. In 2008, as the Archdiocese of Daegu prepared for its centenary during a designated “Year of Reflection,” formation gatherings for parish centenary committees were held by vicariate. Wolseong hosted the gathering for the Third Vicariate, making a local parish a practical center for discussion of the archdiocese's future, the synod, and centenary projects.

On September 10, 2017, Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil presided at a Mass of thanksgiving for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish, during which 367 Catholics received the sacrament of Confirmation. The event marked a generation of growth since the parish's foundation and allowed the community to look back on its journey with the archbishop while renewing its faith sacramentally.

Publicly available sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of the construction of the church building itself. They do, however, establish a clear line from the parish's creation in 1992, through its role in the archdiocesan centenary preparations in 2008, to its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2017. Together these milestones show a new parish becoming rooted in its neighborhood and participating in the wider journey of the archdiocese.
