About this place
The Saint Benedict Culture and Spirituality Center in Waegwan is a retreat and spirituality facility at 61 Gwanmun-ro, Waegwan-eup, Chilgok-gun, rooted in the prayer and hospitality tradition of Waegwan Abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict. It is also listed separately in the Korean Catholic Directory as a retreat and prayer facility.
The center offers space for individual and group retreats, retreats connected with the liturgical seasons, programs combining culture and spirituality, and personal stays for quiet rest and prayer. Its distinctive role is to open Benedictine spirituality to lay Catholics and other visitors through retreat, formation, and cultural activities.
History & origins
The predecessor of the Culture and Spirituality Center was the “Waegwan Retreat House,” established by Waegwan Abbey in the mid-1960s. The Catholic Times describes it as one of the Korean Church's early purpose-built retreat houses, used over many years for retreats, formation of parish leaders, and church meetings.
As the older facilities aged, Waegwan Abbey planned a new retreat complex, and construction of the new center began in 2022. It opened on a trial basis on May 1, 2024, and the new facilities were blessed later that year. Under the name “Saint Benedict Culture and Spirituality Center,” the site began a new phase combining traditional retreat ministry with cultural and spiritual programs.
