About this place
Waegwan Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu at 25 Gwanmun-ro, Waegwan-eup, Chilgok-gun, with the Holy Spirit as its patronal title. The official archdiocesan directory lists the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres with the parish community and also records a mission station belonging to the parish.
The present church building dates from the 1960s and was registered in 2018 as National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 727. Waegwan Catholic Church therefore functions both as an active parish for liturgy and pastoral ministry and as a cultural heritage site that reflects the Catholic history of the region.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Waegwan began as a mission station of Gasil Parish and became an independent parish in 1928. Construction of a parish church began around the time of its establishment, and the early church was dedicated in 1932 in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Florian Demange.
As the community grew, the parish moved to its present site and built a new church in 1967. The church is known as a work designed by Father Alwin Schmid, who was closely associated with Waegwan Abbey, and it was registered in 2018 as National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 727. The passage from mission station to parish, and from the early church to the present building, forms the main line of Waegwan Parish's history.
