History & origins

Wooksu Parish was established on February 17, 1995. It was created during a period of parish expansion under Archbishop Paul Ri Moun-hi, providing an independent pastoral community for Catholics in the eastern part of Suseong-gu. With Saint John Mary Vianney as its patron, the new parish gradually organized its liturgical life, catechesis, and lay associations.

Charitable activity by young Catholics also took root early in the parish's history. The archdiocesan magazine Bit records that Wooksu's youth group of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul began in 1997. Grounded in prayer and Gospel sharing, its members visited welfare facilities and reached out directly to older people living alone and to families with children in need. This shows how the young parish developed lay apostolates rather than merely establishing a place for worship.

In 2020, the archdiocese recorded a Mass of thanksgiving for the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary. The celebration marked the way Wooksu had become established as a local Catholic community over the course of a generation. Since then, the parish has continued to strengthen community spaces and activities that welcome neighbors, extending the patterns of faith formation and charitable service that had developed from its early years.
