About this place

Taejeon Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Taejeon-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, with Saint Peter the Apostle as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics of Taejeon and surrounding districts gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The parish took root as the Chilgok area of northern Daegu urbanized and its population grew.

With Saint Peter the Apostle as its patron, the parish looks to apostolic faith and the unity of the Church as important spiritual signs. Taejeon became an independent parish as the older pastoral network of northern Daegu, including Chilgok Parish, was divided in response to population change, giving local Catholics a parish center close to their everyday living area.

History & origins

The Taejeon area had been identified by the Archdiocese of Daegu as a future pastoral center even before a parish was formally established there. In 1983, the Catholic Times reported on the Archdiocese’s church-building plans for the bicentennial of the Korean Catholic Church and listed Taejeon among the areas where a parish and church would eventually be needed. This did not mean that a parish was established immediately; rather, it is evidence that population growth and pastoral demand in Taejeon were already recognized at the diocesan level.

According to the Archdiocese’s current official information, Taejeon Parish was established on September 6, 1994. The pastoral need identified in the early 1980s continued to grow with urban expansion and was finally given concrete form as an independent parish community in the 1990s. Saint Peter the Apostle was chosen as its patron.

In September 2019, a Mass of thanksgiving for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish and Confirmation were celebrated. This official diocesan record shows that Taejeon had become an established local Catholic community over a generation. Its history can therefore be understood as a progression from a pastoral need already visible in the 1980s, to formal parish establishment in 1994, and then to a mature community marking its twenty-fifth anniversary.
