Sinpyeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu, located in Sinpyeong-dong, Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Worker. Situated in a district that took shape as Gumi developed into an industrial city, the parish serves as a local center where Catholics living amid workplaces and residential neighborhoods sustain their faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities.
Its patron, Saint Joseph the Worker, gives the parish a particularly fitting spiritual point of reference for understanding labor and everyday life in the light of faith. Within Gumi’s environment of industrial complexes and residential areas, Sinpyeong Parish has brought together Catholics of different generations and occupations and provides a stable parish community in which daily life and faith can remain connected.
Sinpyeong is not a church reserved for a particular industrial facility but an ordinary territorial parish of Gumi. Yet the environment in which the parish took shape naturally connects its story with everyday themes of work, family life, migration to the city, and settlement. Its present identity can therefore be understood at the point where Gumi’s industrial character meets the ordinary pastoral life of a Catholic parish.
History & origins
The establishment of Sinpyeong Parish was closely connected with Gumi’s rapid industrialization in the 1970s. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that the development of the electronics industrial complex and the city’s growth brought a large influx of young workers and residents, creating pastoral needs that Wonpyeong Parish could no longer meet by itself. In October 1978, land was secured in Sinpyeong-dong in preparation for a new parish community.
The current official record of the Archdiocese of Daegu gives February 22, 1979 as the date Sinpyeong Parish was established. After its establishment, Benedictine Father Kim Yeong-geun served as the first pastor, and facilities including a rectory, convent, and workers’ center were prepared during the same year. Before a permanent church was completed, these facilities served as temporary spaces for Mass and parish gatherings.
Sacred Heart Kindergarten opened on March 14, 1981, extending the parish’s presence into local early-childhood education. Construction of a new church then proceeded through the offerings of parishioners and support from the religious community, and the new church was dedicated on May 1, 1983. The young parish had thus moved from ministry based in temporary facilities to a community with its own church and educational facilities.
The early history of Sinpyeong shows how a parish was created in response to the spiritual needs of residents and workers newly gathered around Gumi’s industrial complex and how it quickly developed liturgical and educational spaces. That background remains closely resonant with the parish’s dedication to Saint Joseph the Worker. The rapid sequence in which the rectory, workers’ center, kindergarten, and new church were established shows that the early parish was building a pastoral base concerned not only with liturgy but also with workers, families, and the education of children. In a city changing quickly through industrialization, the parish likewise developed its organization and spaces in response to new patterns of daily life.
