History & origins

According to the official Archdiocese of Daegu guide, the Clergy Cemetery was established in 1915. A burial ground for clergy who served the archdiocese developed within the Namsan-dong archdiocesan complex, and bishops and priests, including Bishop Florian Demange, the first bishop of the diocese, were buried there.

Over time, the cemetery came to form part of the historical Catholic landscape of Namsan-dong together with the Lourdes Grotto, St. Justin Seminary, and the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. The archdiocese connects these places through the “Namsan 100-Year Memory Trail,” placing the history of pastoral ministry, education, and religious life within one shared setting.

Liturgical remembrance of deceased clergy continues at the cemetery. On November 2, 2024, a Mass for All Souls’ Day was celebrated there, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop John Bosco Chang Shin-ho, the archdiocesan vicar general. The continuation of this liturgy shows how the cemetery, created in the early twentieth century, remains a place that carries the archdiocese’s memory and prayer into the present.
