About this place

St. Jeong Ha-sang Paul Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Jisan-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu; the official archdiocesan name is “St. Jeong Ha-sang Paul Catholic Church.” Its patron is Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang, a Korean martyr, and the parish serves Catholics in the Jisan and Hwanggeum area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. Having one of the most important Korean lay leaders and martyrs as patron gives the parish a particularly clear connection to the heritage of the Korean martyrs.

The present church was built after the parish community had been established and includes spaces for worship, catechesis, parish administration, and fellowship. It is therefore both an urban parish in Suseong-gu and a place where the faith of Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang and the Korean martyr tradition are remembered within ordinary parish life.

History & origins

St. Jeong Ha-sang Paul Parish was established in the Archdiocese of Daegu on November 4, 2005. The new community was formed by separation from Hwanggeum Parish and St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon Parish, and Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang was chosen as its patron.

Soon after its establishment, the parish began building an independent church. According to the diocesan monthly Light, construction began in June 2006, and on June 10, 2007, Archbishop John Choi Young-su presided over the dedication of the new church. The building provided spaces for the parish office, catechetical rooms, priest’s residence, the main church, and choir.

In 2025 the parish marked its twentieth anniversary by compiling and formally presenting a twenty-year history of St. Jeong Ha-sang Paul Parish during Sunday Mass. The event gathered the community’s memory of the two decades since its foundation and church construction. The parish therefore has a relatively clear documented sequence: separation and establishment, dedication of the new church, and the publication of its twenty-year history.
