About this place

Seonggeon Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Seonggeon-dong, Gyeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province. Its patron is Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr, and the parish is listed as an independent parish in the current archdiocesan directory. In the urban area of Gyeongju, it serves as a center where local Catholics continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community.

Having Saint Andrew Kim Taegon as patron gives the parish a clear spiritual identity. This is not a shrine or memorial preserving only one historical event, but a local parish that carries the faith of a Korean martyr saint into ordinary liturgical and communal life. It is therefore best understood not merely as a historic site, but as a living place where Catholics in Gyeongju continue to practice their faith today.

History & origins

Seonggeon Parish was established as a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu on September 1, 1983. The current archdiocesan directory continues to record the same foundation date and Saint Andrew Kim Taegon as patron, clearly confirming the parish's canonical establishment and basic identity.

Located within the urban area of Gyeongju, the establishment of Seonggeon Parish gave local Catholics a stable independent parish community in which to continue the Mass and sacramental life. The parish has since carried on its local Catholic life under the patronage of Saint Andrew Kim Taegon.

Public archdiocesan sources do not provide enough detail about a pre-parish mission-station period or the stages of church construction and relocation. It is therefore more reliable not to infer an unverified parent parish or building chronology, but to treat the 1983 erection of the parish and its continued life as an independent parish as the securely documented core of its history.
