About this place

Seongdong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving the central area of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. Its patronal title is “Queen of Heavenly Grace,” and the parish is one of the principal communities through which local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and sustain parish life. Although the present name refers to the community in Seongdong-dong, its roots reach back to the first Catholic parish established in the Gyeongju area.

Seongdong is especially remembered as a mother parish for many communities in Gyeongju and Pohang. Because it served for decades as a starting point for the spread of parish life in the region, the church is best understood not simply as an urban parish church but as a place that helps visitors trace the growth of Catholicism in and around Gyeongju.

History & origins

The parish began on May 30, 1926, when Father Lee Seong-in James arrived as its first pastor and the community was established under the name Gyeongju Parish. It was the first parish community rooted in the ancient city of Gyeongju. As new parishes were later formed from this mother community, the pastoral network of the Gyeongju and Pohang areas gradually expanded.

The parish was not originally called Seongdong. On September 1, 1983, when Seonggeon Parish was separated from it, the former Gyeongju Parish took the name Seongdong Parish. The change reflects the growth of the Catholic population and the subdivision of pastoral territories within the city.

On May 31, 2026, a Mass marking the parish’s centenary was celebrated together with Confirmation. The Archdiocese of Daegu described Seongdong as the mother parish of eleven parishes in Gyeongju and seventeen in Pohang. Its name and jurisdiction have changed over the century, but its historical role as a point of origin for evangelization in the region has continued.
