History & origins

The Daughters of St. Paul began on June 15, 1915, in Alba, Italy. Founder Blessed James Alberione believed that the new means of communication of the modern age should be used for evangelization, and Sister Tecla Merlo helped shape and lead the early community. The institute grew with a mission that embraced not only publishing but also emerging media as instruments for proclaiming the Gospel.

The sisters entered Korea on December 13, 1960, in the Archdiocese of Seoul. In the following year they opened their first St. Paul bookstore in Chungmuro and began home visitation and publishing apostolates, gradually expanding their work in step with Korea's changing communications environment.

The institute's official Korean chronology records its entry into the Archdiocese of Daegu in 1972. This shows that the present Daegu community stands in a local history extending for more than half a century rather than being merely a recent administrative presence. The sisters later broadened their apostolate through biblical ministry, audiovisual catechetical materials, an online bookstore, and digital content.

Public official sources do not provide a detailed chronology of every relocation or building used by the Daegu community. The larger historical line, however, is clear: the foundation of the institute, its arrival in Korea, and its entry into Daegu in 1972. The present community continues within that history to carry out the Pauline mission of evangelization through media, publishing, and education in the local Church.
