About this place
Secheon Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu, serving the Secheon-ri area of Dasa-eup in Dalseong-gun, with Mary, Mother of God, as its patron. It is the parish church where local Catholics participate in Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life, and it is registered as an independent parish in the archdiocesan directory.
Archdiocesan material describes the parish territory as centered on Secheon-ri in a local area bounded by Gungsan and the Geumho River. Secheon Catholic Church can therefore be understood as a local pastoral center established so that Catholics in this area could form a nearby parish community rather than relying entirely on parishes farther away.
History & origins
Secheon Parish was established on January 25, 2019, with the arrival of its first pastor, Father Matthew Ahn Dong-uk. Under an archdiocesan decree, the Secheon-ri area of Dasa-eup in Dalseong-gun was defined as the territory of the new parish, and the newly formed community began to develop an independent pastoral structure.
On January 1, 2020, Auxiliary Bishop John Bosco Chang Shin-ho, then vicar general, celebrated the blessing Mass for the parish’s temporary church. His homily explained that the community was still in the stage before construction of a permanent church and was establishing the basic parish setting, including a tabernacle, a rectory, and space for parish gatherings. The current archdiocesan directory records Mary, Mother of God, as the parish patron.
