History & origins

The Archdiocese of Daegu records October 18, 1933 as the establishment date of Samdeok Catholic Church. According to an archdiocesan account prepared for the parish's 80th anniversary, Samdeok began as a parish for Japanese Catholics. This reflects the particular social composition of central Daegu during the Japanese colonial period and the way Catholic communities were organized at that time.

As densely populated residential areas shifted toward the outskirts of the city in the early 2000s, the archdiocese reinterpreted the pastoral role of Samdeok Parish. In 2008 it was designated as a parish focused on youth ministry and, from October 1, renamed “Samdeok Youth Catholic Church,” with a role in developing and applying pastoral approaches for young Catholics.

In 2013 the parish celebrated its 80th anniversary with a thanksgiving Mass and Confirmation, and the community prepared archival material documenting parish life from its early years through the contemporary period. The archdiocese's current parish directory again uses the name “Samdeok Catholic Church,” although the publicly available sources do not establish when the name was changed back. The history of Samdeok can therefore be understood as a movement from a 1930s urban parish foundation to a distinctive emphasis on youth ministry in the 2000s.
