History & origins

Pyeongni Parish was established on November 16, 1979. Current parish information from the Archdiocese of Daegu records this as the official establishment date, and a diocesan biographical record for Father Andrew Yi Chang-bae also states that he became pastor of Pyeongni Church on the same date. The beginning of the parish can therefore be confirmed from two different official diocesan records.

This research did not locate sufficiently reliable public sources for the detailed construction history of the first parish church. The community nevertheless continued to develop its pastoral life around Pyeongni-dong in western Daegu. Because the 1979 starting point is clearly documented, it is more appropriate to preserve the verified chronology than to add uncertain dates for construction or parish division.

In June 2019, Auxiliary Bishop John Bosco Chang Shin-ho presided over a Mass of thanksgiving for the fortieth anniversary of the parish. The 1979 establishment record and the fortieth-anniversary celebration are two clear milestones showing the community’s continuity in the same neighborhood for nearly four decades. Pyeongni’s history is therefore best read through the steady endurance of an ordinary local parish rather than through unverified dramatic events.
