History & origins

Oksan Parish was established on March 21, 1983. The construction of its church formed part of the wider church-building efforts ahead of the bicentennial of the Catholic Church in Korea. The Catholic Times reported that Samdeok Parish undertook the Oksan church project and that groundbreaking took place on March 19, 1983.

A topping-out ceremony followed on August 21 of the same year, and the new church was dedicated on March 4, 1984, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Paul Ri Moun-hi. The near-simultaneous establishment of the parish and construction of its church meant that the new community acquired both an independent parish structure and its own worship space in a short period.
