History & origins

The Sisters of Notre Dame were founded on October 1, 1850, in Coesfeld, Germany, from a community begun by two women educators. In 2025 the congregation commemorated the 175th anniversary of its foundation and officially described its continuing charism around the world as witnessing to the provident care of the good God.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records July 7, 1967, as the date of the congregation’s arrival in Korea. The congregation’s own materials also marked July 7, 2025, as the 58th anniversary of its Korean mission, supporting that chronology. A Korean province was subsequently established and communities were formed in several dioceses; today a Daegu community is officially registered in Sangin-dong within the Archdiocese of Daegu.

The official sources reviewed for this research did not establish the exact date when the Daegu community itself was opened, nor when its present building or chapel was created. The history of this particular location can therefore be stated with confidence only within the broader sequence of the congregation’s foundation, its arrival in Korea, and the present Daegu community.
