About this place

Mutae Parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Daegu and serves the Catholic community in and around Seobyeon-dong in northern Daegu. Its patron saint is Saint Paul the Apostle, and the parish functions as the center where local Catholics continue their faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal life. The parish's official name, affiliation, and patron are confirmed in the Archdiocese of Daegu parish directory.

The Mutae area developed as a new residential district, and the parish took root amid that local transformation. Today, Mutae Parish can be understood as a Catholic community where different generations share their faith within a relatively new living area and as a place open to the surrounding neighborhood.

History & origins

Mutae Parish was canonically established on August 29, 2003, under the name “Seobyeon Parish.” According to an early account in the diocesan magazine Light, there were 126 registered Catholics when the new parish separated from Seongbuk Parish, while about fifty people participated in the first Mass. In September of the same year, the name was changed to “Mutae Parish,” reflecting the local place name and its meaning.

After the parish was established, securing an independent church building became a major task. Parishioners raised building funds through rosary-making, bazaars, and various offerings, and the diocesan weekly announced a groundbreaking ceremony for the new church on November 25, 2007. The process of preparing the church together helped the small new community build the foundations of parish life.

In 2023, a Mass marking the twentieth anniversary of the parish and a celebration of Confirmation were held. Beginning as a small faith community in a newly developed district, Mutae Parish grew through the construction of its church and the maturation of its community into an established parish for the Mutae-Seobyeon area of northern Daegu.
