About this place

Mundeok Parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Daegu and serves the Catholic community in the Ocheon area of southern Pohang. Its patron is Saint Peter Yu Tae-chol, a Korean martyr, and the parish is the local center where Catholics continue their faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal life.

The present name “Mundeok Parish” carries more than a geographical meaning: it is a name that the community consciously chose again after reflecting on its own history and identity. By retaining the local parish name while honoring its martyr patron, the community holds together the memory of Korean martyrdom and the history of the local Catholic community.

History & origins

Mundeok Parish was established on August 26, 2005. Official archdiocesan records identify Saint Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron. The Catholic community in southern Pohang began its life as an independent parish under the name Mundeok.

In 2015, when the new church moved from Mundeok-dong to Wondong, the parish was renamed “Saint Yu Tae-chol Parish” after its patron. Later, after a vote of the parishioners and discussion by the parish pastoral council, the community decided to restore the former name. With the approval of the archbishop, the name “Mundeok Parish” was reinstated in 2024. The change shows how the parish recovered its historical local name even after moving and adopting a new title.

On September 28, 2025, a Mass of thanksgiving marked the twentieth anniversary of the parish, together with Confirmation. Before the Mass, a Marian statue commemorating the twentieth anniversary was blessed. The celebration offered an opportunity to look back on the two decades since 2005 and to reaffirm the identity of the present parish community.
