History & origins

The Order of Friars Minor Conventual belongs to the Franciscan tradition, and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea directory records April 16, 1209, as the date of the order's foundation. The friars have continued communal religious life and apostolic work within the long Franciscan tradition, and the order entered Korea in October 1958.

After entering Korea, the order established religious communities in a number of regions. The community in Daegu is now officially registered as the 'Daegu Immaculate Conception Friary / Novitiate.' The designation 'novitiate' indicates that the Daegu house is not simply a residence but a house entrusted with initial religious formation.

The official sources reviewed do not identify the date when the Daegu friary itself was established or when it moved to its present location. The historical context is therefore limited to the origin of the order, its entry into Korea, and the verified present existence of the Daegu novitiate, without inferring a local chronology that is not documented.
