About this place
Keungogae Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Sinam-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, with Saint John the Apostle as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics of Sinam-dong and the Keungogae area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, serving as a center of Catholic faith within the eastern urban district of Daegu.
The parish name preserves the long-used local place name “Keungogae,” linking the identity of the Catholic community naturally with its neighborhood. With Saint John the Apostle as patron, the parish takes the Gospel and a life of love as a spiritual model, while successive generations of Catholics continue to celebrate the liturgy and build community in the same local parish.
History & origins
According to official Archdiocesan information, Keungogae Parish was established on December 5, 1981. It was created as an independent pastoral community during a period of residential growth in eastern Daegu, allowing local Catholics to live their parish faith closer to home. The parish took the long-used local name Keungogae and became rooted in the Sinam-dong area.
For the parish’s thirtieth anniversary in 2011, the interior and exterior of the church were extensively renewed, and a blessing was celebrated on April 24, Easter Sunday. The work provided an opportunity to adapt a long-used church to the changing needs of the community while renewing the faith inherited from the parish’s early years.
On December 5, 2021, a Mass of thanksgiving for the fortieth anniversary of the parish was celebrated together with Confirmation. The thirtieth-anniversary church renewal and the fortieth-anniversary Mass are documented milestones showing how Keungogae became an established local Catholic community over more than a generation.
