중리 성당

History & origins

Jungri Parish was separated from the existing Indong Parish and established on October 1, 2001, as the population grew in the Indong area and in Jungri, Seokjeok-eup. Both the Digital Chilgok Encyclopedia and sources from the Archdiocese of Daegu record this background of separation and the same establishment date.

The new parish did not begin with a completed church. The archdiocesan magazine Light records that in the year after its establishment the community set up a greenhouse-style temporary church on land it had purchased and used container buildings as the priest’s residence and parish office. In a rapidly developing area with many young adults and children, the community thus began its life of faith around temporary facilities.

The Daegu Archdiocesan Bulletin records that the new church was dedicated on June 20, 2004. The progression from a greenhouse church to a permanent church building in about three years remains a central part of the parish’s history, showing how Jungri Parish became established amid rapid changes in the surrounding residential and industrial area.
