About this place

Jisan Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Suseong-gu, Daegu, and a pastoral center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and share community life. The archdiocese’s official parish information identifies its patronal mystery not with an individual saint but with “Pentecost.” The liturgical mystery of the Holy Spirit gathering and sending the Church is therefore an important sign of the parish’s identity.

This patronal dedication invites an understanding of Jisan that goes beyond devotion to a particular saint and also highlights the parish’s vocation to become one community in the Holy Spirit and to live the Gospel. The church is a place within the daily life of Jisan-dong where Catholics continue their faith centered on prayer and the sacraments.

History & origins

Jisan Parish was established on January 4, 1978, according to the official records of the Archdiocese of Daegu. The creation of an independent parish in the Jisan area of Suseong-gu, Daegu, provided an institutional foundation for Catholics to continue liturgical and pastoral life within their local community. As the surrounding urban residential area developed, the parish's history came to include not only sacramental life but also responses to hardships faced by its neighbors.

In March 1998, when unemployment and financial hardship were increasing in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, Jisan Parish organized free medical care together with Catholic healthcare professionals. Catholic Times recorded that about 500 local residents received treatment, and also reported a plan to distribute rice to about 700 households using funds collected by parishioners during Lent. This was one instance in which the community responded to economic hardship among local residents through healthcare and material sharing.

On June 19, 2022, Confirmation was celebrated under the presidency of the archbishop, with 65 people receiving the sacrament. The celebration, taking place decades after the parish's establishment, records the continuing transmission of faith within the sacramental life of the archdiocese.

On September 29, 2024, the vicar general bishop celebrated Mass during a pastoral visit, and the related homily emphasized a synodal spirit in which the parish community discerns the voice of the Holy Spirit together. From the parish's establishment in 1978 through local outreach in the 1990s and recent celebrations of Confirmation and pastoral visitation, the record traces how Jisan Church has continued liturgy, pastoral life, and care for neighbors amid changing times.
