History & origins

Preparations for Jigok Parish became concrete on November 27, 2008, with the submission of a project plan for the construction of a church. The parish chronicle records that construction began the following year, on November 15, 2009.

The church building was completed on August 27, 2010, and the Archdiocese of Daegu’s official parish information also records that date as the establishment date of the parish. The parish’s own chronicle then states that it separated from Idong Parish on September 1 and that, before moving into the new church, Mass was celebrated in the hall of the Fourth Vicariate. The formal establishment and the practical steps of separation and beginning pastoral life thus followed within a matter of days.

The community moved into the new church on November 15, 2010, and the Jigok church was consecrated on January 9, 2011. Four days later, a concert commemorating the dedication of the church was also held. Construction, separation, relocation, and consecration followed one another in a short period, completing the parish’s physical and pastoral foundation.

This chronology clearly shows how Jigok became independent from the jurisdiction of Idong Parish and took root as a parish for a new local community. Because both the archdiocese’s formal establishment date and the parish’s own detailed chronology survive, the administrative stages of forming the parish can be distinguished from the practical process by which the community settled into its new home.
