About this place

Jeongpyeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Jeongpyeong-dong, Gyeongsan, serving Catholics of Jeongpyeong and nearby neighborhoods as a center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The archdiocese's official directory names Saint Paul the Apostle as the patron of the parish. Paul's life of bringing the Gospel to many communities and encouraging fellow Christians offers a spiritual reference for a parish seeking to learn and share the faith within modern urban life.

Jeongpyeong-dong is a residential area where central Gyeongsan meets the greater Daegu living sphere, and the parish brings Catholics of different generations together as one local church community. Its role extends beyond regular participation in the liturgy: the parish provides a place to learn the faith, build fellowship, serve others, and connect the ordinary life of home, work, and school with Catholic faith.

History & origins

According to the official directory of the Archdiocese of Daegu, Jeongpyeong Parish was established on February 28, 2006. As residential development and patterns of daily life changed in Gyeongsan, the creation of an independent parish gave Catholics of Jeongpyeong a closer pastoral base for sustained parish life.

On January 30, 2016, as the parish approached its 10th anniversary, the community began a project of making traditional Korean fermented sauces together. A 2018 article in the Daegu diocesan bulletin reported that the activity was then being held for the third time and explained that it had begun with the aims of preserving traditional culture and practicing a more ecological way of life. Preparing and sharing the sauces together connected everyday food and labor with the common life of faith.

This initiative shows that the history of Jeongpyeong Parish is not made up only of liturgical milestones or changes to church facilities. After its first decade, the community sought to extend faith into ordinary culture and ecological practice, giving concrete form to parish fellowship through making and sharing something together. It is one example of how a relatively young parish developed a distinctive communal character within its neighborhood.
