History & origins

According to the official directory of the Archdiocese of Daegu, Jangseong Parish was established on November 15, 1993. It took shape as an independent Catholic community during a period of residential expansion in northern Pohang, providing Catholics of Jangseong-dong and nearby neighborhoods with a stable base for parish life close to home.

On November 26, 2008, the parish marked its 15th anniversary with a commemorative concert. The archdiocesan magazine Light recorded that both parishioners and local residents attended. Alongside liturgical and sacramental life, this cultural event offers a glimpse of a parish seeking to broaden its relationship with the surrounding neighborhood.

On November 26, 2023, a Mass of thanksgiving for the 30th anniversary was celebrated together with Confirmation, and the archdiocesan record states that 124 people received the sacrament. The record from the 15th-anniversary community event to the 30th-anniversary thanksgiving Mass and Confirmation shows a parish that built up both faith and local relationships over the course of a generation. Its history since foundation is therefore not merely the passing of years, but a process of taking root as a local church through liturgy, sacraments, and encounter with its neighbors.
