About this place
Jangnyang Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Buk-gu, Pohang, serving Catholics of Jangseong-dong and the wider northern Pohang area as a center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The archdiocese's official directory names Our Lady of Perpetual Help as the parish patron. Devotion to Mary under this title, seeking her intercession as she leads the faithful to Christ amid difficulties, provides a spiritual sign for a parish that holds together the needs of daily life and the life of faith.
Northern Pohang is an urban district shaped by expanding residential neighborhoods and several generations living side by side. With spaces for education and community gatherings as well as worship, it helps faith extend beyond the private sphere into relationships across generations and with neighbors.
History & origins
According to the official directory of the Archdiocese of Daegu, Jangnyang Parish was established on June 28, 2002. It became an independent parish during a period of residential growth in northern Pohang, giving Catholics of Jangseong-dong and neighboring districts a closer pastoral base for regular parish life.
On May 1, 2011, Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil presided over the blessing of a new education center and rectory. The archdiocesan record describes the facilities as a basement-and-three-story structure connected to the existing church building, with a total floor area of about 1,289 square meters. The report noted that the parish served an area with many younger Catholics in northern Pohang and expressed the hope that the new education center would support evangelization and faith formation.
This expansion shows that Jangnyang's history did not stop with providing a place for liturgy; the parish also developed a broader pastoral base for education and community gatherings. The addition of dedicated educational and communal facilities less than a decade after the parish was established is a clear sign of how it adapted its pastoral environment to the needs of a growing Catholic population in northern Pohang.
