History & origins

According to the official directory of the Archdiocese of Daegu, Jangnyang Parish was established on June 28, 2002. It became an independent parish during a period of residential growth in northern Pohang, giving Catholics of Jangseong-dong and neighboring districts a closer pastoral base for regular parish life.

On May 1, 2011, Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil presided over the blessing of a new education center and rectory. The archdiocesan record describes the facilities as a basement-and-three-story structure connected to the existing church building, with a total floor area of about 1,289 square meters. The report noted that the parish served an area with many younger Catholics in northern Pohang and expressed the hope that the new education center would support evangelization and faith formation.

This expansion shows that Jangnyang's history did not stop with providing a place for liturgy; the parish also developed a broader pastoral base for education and community gatherings. The addition of dedicated educational and communal facilities less than a decade after the parish was established is a clear sign of how it adapted its pastoral environment to the needs of a growing Catholic population in northern Pohang.
