Indong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Gumi, serving Catholics around Inui-dong as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The archdiocese's official directory identifies Saint Francis Xavier, the great Jesuit missionary, as the parish patron. His life of carrying the Gospel to distant lands resonates with the identity of a parish that has transmitted the faith locally and helped new Catholic communities take root.
Indong Parish is a local center in eastern Gumi where Catholics gather regularly for the liturgy, learn the faith, and care for one another. It also provided the foundation from which several neighboring parishes were later formed. For that reason, its significance extends beyond the boundaries of a single parish: it is one of the connecting points in the expansion of Catholic community life across eastern Gumi.
History & origins
The history of the Indong community begins before the establishment of the parish itself, in its years as a mission station. The Daegu diocesan bulletin records that Indong Mission Station was then under Waegwan Parish and that it was elevated to parish status on January 1, 1979. The transition from a mission community to an independent parish marked an important turning point, reflecting the growth of the Catholic population and pastoral needs in eastern Gumi.
After its establishment, Indong Parish in turn gave rise to several neighboring parishes as the area continued to grow. According to the official record, Jungni Catholic Church separated from Indong in 2001, Okgye Catholic Church in 2002, and Gupyeong Catholic Church in 2011. A community that had begun as a small mission station under Waegwan thus became an independent parish and later the mother community of three new parishes.
This chronology shows that the history of Indong cannot be reduced to changes in a church building. Its central story is the growth from mission station to parish and then to a mother parish that helped establish surrounding communities. The repeated adjustment of pastoral boundaries and creation of new parishes in response to the growth of eastern Gumi formed a local Catholic lineage that continues to shape the region today.
