Indong Catholic Church

History & origins

The history of the Indong community begins before the establishment of the parish itself, in its years as a mission station. The Daegu diocesan bulletin records that Indong Mission Station was then under Waegwan Parish and that it was elevated to parish status on January 1, 1979. The transition from a mission community to an independent parish marked an important turning point, reflecting the growth of the Catholic population and pastoral needs in eastern Gumi.

After its establishment, Indong Parish in turn gave rise to several neighboring parishes as the area continued to grow. According to the official record, Jungni Catholic Church separated from Indong in 2001, Okgye Catholic Church in 2002, and Gupyeong Catholic Church in 2011. A community that had begun as a small mission station under Waegwan thus became an independent parish and later the mother community of three new parishes.

This chronology shows that the history of Indong cannot be reduced to changes in a church building. Its central story is the growth from mission station to parish and then to a mother parish that helped establish surrounding communities. The repeated adjustment of pastoral boundaries and creation of new parishes in response to the growth of eastern Gumi formed a local Catholic lineage that continues to shape the region today.
