Institute of the Blessed Sacrament

History & origins

The origins of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity, to which the Daegu community in Gumi belongs, go back to November 19, 1956. The congregation's official history records that Father Lawrence Yun Eul-su founded the institute on that date. On June 5, 1958, twenty-four members made their first profession in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Paul Ro Ki-nam, and on June 25 of the same month the first two sisters were sent to Yesan Parish, giving concrete form to the congregation's apostolic work.

The constitutions were approved on September 25, 1960, and on October 1 of that year Archbishop Ro Ki-nam declared the community a diocesan religious institute. The first perpetual professions followed on June 21, 1962. Founder Father Yun Eul-su died on May 9, 1971. Through these stages, the early community acquired a stable canonical framework and a foundation for continuing religious life.

The congregation later expanded its apostolate beyond Korea. Its official chronology records missionary work in Peru beginning in 1989, ministry to the Korean community in Kyoto, Japan in 1992, mission in Mongolia in 2008, and mission in Vietnam in 2009. This development shows how the founding desire to live Eucharistic love as concrete service to one's neighbor spread across different regions and cultures. As a community founded in Korea broadened its work into overseas mission and ministry to Korean communities abroad, its local houses and apostolates came to embody the same spirituality in different settings.
