The Daegu community of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity is identified in the Korean Catholic Directory as a local community of a women's institute of consecrated life in the Archdiocese of Daegu, located in Gumi. The congregation's official English name is Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity. Unlike a territorial parish, it does not exercise pastoral jurisdiction over a defined area; it is a religious community where sisters live common prayer and community life while carrying out the congregation's apostolate.
The congregation places at the heart of its spirituality the love of Christ revealed in the Eucharist, lived concretely as inbo—neighborly protection, care, and service. It describes itself as an apostolic religious institute cooperating in material and spiritual service and in the proclamation of the Gospel. The Daegu community can therefore be understood as a local expression of this mission: a religious house where Eucharistic spirituality and common life are directed toward service of one's neighbors.
History & origins
The origins of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity, to which the Daegu community in Gumi belongs, go back to November 19, 1956. The congregation's official history records that Father Lawrence Yun Eul-su founded the institute on that date. On June 5, 1958, twenty-four members made their first profession in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Paul Ro Ki-nam, and on June 25 of the same month the first two sisters were sent to Yesan Parish, giving concrete form to the congregation's apostolic work.
The constitutions were approved on September 25, 1960, and on October 1 of that year Archbishop Ro Ki-nam declared the community a diocesan religious institute. The first perpetual professions followed on June 21, 1962. Founder Father Yun Eul-su died on May 9, 1971. Through these stages, the early community acquired a stable canonical framework and a foundation for continuing religious life.
The congregation later expanded its apostolate beyond Korea. Its official chronology records missionary work in Peru beginning in 1989, ministry to the Korean community in Kyoto, Japan in 1992, mission in Mongolia in 2008, and mission in Vietnam in 2009. This development shows how the founding desire to live Eucharistic love as concrete service to one's neighbor spread across different regions and cultures. As a community founded in Korea broadened its work into overseas mission and ministry to Korean communities abroad, its local houses and apostolates came to embody the same spirituality in different settings.
