Hyomok Catholic Church

History & origins

Before an independent parish existed, Catholics in the Hyomok area attended Bokja Parish, but transportation difficulties made regular church life challenging. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, Father Lee Chang-ho of Bokja Parish offered to celebrate a Saturday anticipated Mass if a place could be found. Parishioner Lee Seong-nam made his home available, and regular Masses there gradually formed a local community similar to a mission station.

As the number of believers grew and local Catholic groups became more active, requests for a parish followed, and Hyomok Parish was erected in July 1977. The current archdiocesan record gives July 14, while the encyclopedia gives July 5; because of this discrepancy, only the month is stated here with certainty. The parish used temporary premises and began construction of a church later that year.

After the church and supporting facilities were completed, a dedication was celebrated by Bishop Paul Ri Moun-hi on April 22, 1979. Continued growth led to the separation of Manchon Parish in 1983, while an expansion of the Hyomok church was completed in 1984. In 2002, Manchon 1-dong Parish was also separated, bringing another adjustment of parish territory.

Hyomok's history is thus the story of a Mass community that began in a parishioner's home, became an independent parish with a permanent church, and eventually grew enough to give rise to neighboring parishes. Urban expansion and the increase of Catholics can be seen directly in the parish's establishment, enlargement, and repeated boundary changes. The encyclopedia also records that after the 1984 church expansion the parish began publishing a bulletin, broadening communication within the community. Physical expansion and organizational maturation therefore proceeded in the same period. Hyomok's development was not simply an increase in the size of the church building, but a coordinated adjustment of space and pastoral structures to a growing Catholic population.
