Hyunggok Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving the Gumi area, where Catholics around Hyunggok-dong sustain their life of faith centered on Mass and the sacraments. The archdiocese identifies St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as the parish patron. Having one of the young Korean martyrs as patron offers an important key to understanding a community called to bear witness to faith in ordinary life.

History & origins
Hyunggok Parish was established on December 21, 1990, as part of the expansion of the Archdiocese of Daegu's parish network in the Gumi area. The archdiocese's current parish record gives the same date, and Hyunggok was among the parishes erected during the tenure of Archbishop Paul Ri Moun-hi.
After its establishment, the parish took root as an independent Catholic community in Gumi's growing residential area. Official sources sufficient to reconstruct the early church-building process or the exact boundaries of the mother parish were not secured in this research, so unverified details have not been added.
In 2020, the parish marked its 30th anniversary with a thanksgiving Mass and Confirmation celebrated by Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil. The event provides an archdiocesan record of the community's continuity across a generation since its establishment in 1990.
The 30th-anniversary thanksgiving Mass was celebrated on October 25, 2020, at the Gumi University athletic field, where 63 people also received Confirmation. The record of the anniversary being celebrated in a large outdoor venue rather than only inside the church preserves a concrete image of the community gathering to reflect on the meaning of its foundation.
