Hwangseong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Hwangseong-dong, Gyeongju, with St. Francis Xavier as its patron. It serves Catholics in the northern urban area of Gyeongju, where parish life is centered on Mass and the sacraments, and belongs to the pastoral network of the archdiocese's Fourth Vicariate.
Unlike the many historic monuments for which Gyeongju is known, the primary significance of Hwangseong lies in the present-day faith life of local residents. Its patronage by the missionary St. Francis Xavier connects the parish identity with a spirituality of evangelization and mission. Visitors can therefore encounter it as a living Catholic parish within modern Gyeongju.
Official sources do not present Hwangseong as a heritage monument or tourist attraction. They identify it primarily through its parish status, patron, and continuing liturgical community. This distinction is important for visitors to Gyeongju: Hwangseong is best understood separately from the city's ancient heritage tourism, as a place where the faith life of contemporary local residents continues.
History & origins
Hwangseong Parish was separated from Seonggeon Parish in Gyeongju and established on October 19, 1993. The Archdiocese of Daegu's current parish record and a 2023 diocesan bulletin both give the same date, clearly establishing the parish's formal beginning.
The parish was created as the Catholic community in Gyeongju expanded and an independent pastoral center became necessary in a new residential area. Its mother parish, Seonggeon, had given rise to several parishes in the Gyeongju region, and Hwangseong became one branch of that continuing expansion.
The church building was later renewed to meet the needs of the community. The diocesan bulletin records that the sanctuary underwent remodeling in November 2020 and reached its present form. Hwangseong's history can thus be understood as a process of parish division in Gyeongju's urban growth, followed by the renewal of its worship space.
The official chronology confirmed in this research is centered on the parish's establishment, its separation from Seonggeon, and the recent church remodeling. Reliable official evidence was not sufficient to reconstruct the construction date of the first church or detailed later additions. The history has therefore been limited to verified changes, without importing details from similarly named churches or unofficial records.
