Hwangjeom Faith Heritage Site

History & origins

The roots of the Catholic community around Hwangjeom reach back to believers who fled deep into the mountains during the Byeongin Persecution. A pilgrimage account based on diocesan material records that Catholics hid in the Jangjateo valley, about one kilometer from present-day Hwangjeom, where they formed a village and survived by making charcoal and pottery and practicing slash-and-burn farming. It was a mountain community in which faith and livelihood were preserved together under persecution.

The Jangjateo settlement was damaged by a major flood in 1936, and the community moved toward Hwangjeom-ri. Hwangjeom mission station then became the center of the community, and in 1972 the present mission church was built through the efforts of Father Eric Yun. This movement shows the transition from a persecution-era refuge to a settled mission community.

The Archdiocese of Daegu later developed the area around Jangjateo and Hwangjeom mission station to preserve the memory of the old Catholic village. In 2012, the archdiocese established lodge-style rest facilities for the faithful, allowing the site to serve not only as a preserved historical landscape but also as a place for pilgrimage and spiritual renewal.

Hwangjeom's history therefore runs from a mountain refuge formed under persecution, through relocation and the stabilization of a mission station after natural disaster, to archdiocesan preservation of the faith heritage. Its distinctive value lies less in monumental structures than in the traces of ordinary Catholic life and movement preserved in the landscape. Church press records also note that the area around Hwangjeom mission station suffered serious landslide and flood damage during Typhoon Rusa in 2002. The fact that this mountain community faced not only persecution but repeated natural hazards shows that Hwangjeom's history is more than the story of an old Catholic village. Today's heritage site also preserves the memory of a community that endured those difficult living conditions.
