Korean Martyrs Blessed Sisters

The Daegu community of the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs is a women’s religious community belonging to the Suwon Province and participates in parish apostolate on the same grounds as Duryu Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Daegu. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies the site as the “Daegu Community, Suwon Province,” and the Archdiocese of Daegu’s parish information likewise lists the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs as the religious community serving Duryu Parish.

The congregation traces its roots to a Korean religious community begun in 1946 by Father Leo Bang Yu-ryong, also known as Mua Andrea, together with Sister Teresa Yoon Byeong-hyeon and Sister Marie-Thérèse Hong Eun-sun. An important element of its identity is the effort to carry forward the faith and spirit of martyrdom of the Korean martyrs within religious life. The Daegu community can therefore be understood as a local place where this spirituality is lived through parish ministry: it is not an independent parish or shrine, but a branch community in which the sisters serve the local Church.
