Gupyeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu, forming a Catholic community centered on Gupyeong-dong in Gumi. Its patron is Our Lady of the Rosary. Gupyeong Catholic Church is therefore both a place where local Catholics participate in the liturgy and a center for children's and adult formation, fellowship, and pastoral activity in the eastern part of Gumi.
History & origins
Gupyeong Parish began as a new parish after being separated from Indong Parish in August 2011, and the archdiocesan directory records its formal establishment date as August 26, 2011. The new community took pastoral responsibility for Gupyeong-dong and Sindong and began building the foundations of an independent parish.
The major development after the parish's establishment was the construction of a new church. The Archdiocese of Daegu records that the new church was dedicated on October 26, 2014, with Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil presiding. The two-story building stands on a 2,168-square-meter site with 1,251 square meters of floor space. The first floor contains a small chapel, catechetical rooms, dining and lounge areas, and an office, while the second floor contains the main church, rectory, nursery, and catechists' room.
The dedication marked the transition of a recently separated community into a parish with stable spaces for liturgy, education, and fellowship. The history of Gupyeong Catholic Church can therefore be traced clearly through its separation from Indong Parish, establishment as an independent parish, and dedication of the new church.
