Gasir Catholic Church

History & origins

Gasil Parish was established on June 11, 1895. Archdiocesan materials describe it as one of the early parishes in the Gyeongsang region after Gyesan Church, once serving a broad territory that extended across northern Gyeongsang and into parts of Chungcheong.

The church and rectory that survive today were built around 1922–1923 and were designed by Father Victor Louis Poisnel of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. The complex is regarded as an example of modern Catholic architecture combining Romanesque and Gothic elements, and the church and former rectory were designated as tangible cultural heritage of Gyeongsangbuk-do in 2003.

During the Korean War the church was used as a hospital. Although it stood in the area of the fierce Nakdong River battles, the building survived without major destruction. From 1952, pastoral care was entrusted to the Benedictines. The history of Gasil thus brings together early regional mission, modern church architecture, wartime memory, and the continuing pastoral presence of a religious order.
