About this place
Galpyeong Retreat House is listed in the Catholic Church directory of Korea as a retreat and prayer house belonging to the Archdiocese of Daegu, with the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus responsible for it. Unlike a parish, it does not exercise territorial pastoral jurisdiction; its central purpose is to provide a religiously operated setting where people can step away from daily routines for prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
The retreat house is closely connected with the spirituality of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Because it stands in a place associated with the life and memory of the congregation’s founder, it can be understood not simply as a residential training facility but as a place where retreatants encounter the congregation’s historical memory and spiritual tradition.
History & origins
The historical background of Galpyeong Retreat House is linked to the later life of Father Louis Deslandes, known in Korea as Nam Dae-yeong, founder of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Catholic GoodNews records that the rectory where he lived until the end of his life remains at the site.
Today the retreat house is officially registered as a retreat and prayer facility of the Archdiocese of Daegu under the responsibility of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Reliable public sources, however, do not allow the exact foundation year of the present retreat house or every stage of its construction and expansion to be established with confidence. Its history is therefore best presented through the founder-related memory that can be verified and the congregation’s continuing stewardship of the place.
