Doryang Cathedral

History & origins

The establishment of Doryang Parish is documented with unusual clarity in an official archdiocesan homily. By a priestly personnel decree dated August 30, 1996, the Archdiocese of Daegu created Doryang Parish and appointed Father Pius Park Soo-tae as its first pastor. In recalling this event, the archdiocese explained that the appointment of a priest responsible for a parish territory is a central element in the canonical and pastoral establishment of a parish.

Doryang subsequently developed as an independent parish community in Gumi. On September 25, 2016, a Mass commemorated the 20th anniversary of the parish, and the homily explicitly looked back to the creation of the parish and the appointment of its first pastor twenty years earlier. The 1996 personnel decree and the 2016 anniversary therefore provide two firm points connecting the parish’s origin and continuity in official sources.

The publicly available archdiocesan materials do not provide a complete chronology of the first church building or later changes to the facilities. It is therefore more accurate to present Doryang’s history around its verifiable administrative establishment and the continuity of its community, leaving detailed architectural history to be added only when further official evidence is available.
