Daemyeong Parish (대명 성당) is a parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Daegu in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, with Saint John the Baptist as its patron. Listed in the archdiocese’s official parish directory, it is a regular territorial parish serving Catholics in the Daemyeong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Daemyeong-dong forms a broad residential area in southern central Daegu, and the parish is a local center where the faithful can continue liturgical and sacramental life close to their everyday surroundings. Through devotion to its patron saint and the regular life of parish worship, children, young people, and adults learn and share the faith together as a basic community of the local Church.
History & origins
According to the official parish records of the Archdiocese of Daegu, the present Daemyeong Parish was established on August 19, 1973, with Saint John the Baptist as its patron. Namsan Parish’s official centennial history states that Daemyeong was among several parishes later separated from Namsan, so the present parish can be understood within the broader process of parish division and growth in central Daegu.
Namsan Parish itself had moved its church to Daemyeong-dong in 1937 and for a time used the name “Daemyeong-dong Catholic Church,” but in 1953 it moved to the present Namsan church and adopted the name “Namsan Catholic Church.” That former name and the present Daemyeong Parish established in 1973 do not refer to the same parish. No separate official chronology was found for the construction of Daemyeong’s first church or the precise administrative steps of its separation, so those details are not asserted here.
