About this place
Daejam Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu serving the southern part of Pohang. According to the archdiocesan directory, its patron is Saint Joseph the Worker. Centered on the Daejam-dong area, it is a local Catholic community where the faithful share Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. In the context of the industrial city of Pohang, the dedication to Saint Joseph the Worker also has a natural resonance with the character of the surrounding region.
Daejam is one of the parish communities that emerged as the Catholic presence in the Pohang area expanded into a number of local parishes. Today it continues ordinary liturgical and sacramental life while passing on the memory and faith of the local Catholic community to a new generation. The formal presentation of a thirty-year parish history in 2020 also shows that the community has made a deliberate effort to preserve and organize its own history.
History & origins
Daejam Parish was established on July 12, 1990. Catholic parish life in the Pohang area had expanded from the establishment of Pohang Parish—today’s Jukdo Catholic Church—in 1950, with new parishes being formed as the local Catholic population and pastoral needs grew. An archdiocesan publication places Daehae, Daejam, Jangseong, Gigye, and other parishes within this broader development. The establishment of Daejam was therefore one stage in the expansion of the Catholic pastoral network in the Pohang region.
On October 18, 2020, the parish celebrated the 30th anniversary of its establishment with a Mass of Thanksgiving and Confirmation. Twenty-eight members of Daejam Parish and four from Hyoja Parish received Confirmation, and a formal presentation of the parish’s thirty-year history was also held during the Mass. By organizing the years since its establishment into a documented parish history rather than holding only an anniversary celebration, the community marked an important moment of reflection on its own development.
